Crime documentaries examining the flaws in the criminal justice system are very popular right now with series like Making a Murderer and public radio’s Serial becoming a hit with fans. Now, TV One is rolling out their own true crime series hosted by prominent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump. Created by award-winning producer Rushion McDonald, Evidence of Innocence will profile individuals who were wrongly convicted of crimes and detail their struggle to clear their names.

Tia Smith, TV One’s Sr. Director of Original Programming and Production, said the network is excited about the upcoming series.

“TV One is excited to partner with Rushion McDonald to spotlight the inspirational stories of wrongly accused people who were fortunate to find justice after being wrongly accused and convicted for crimes they did not commit,” Smith said. “These stories of redemption after going through horrific circumstances are certain to encourage viewers to face their own personal challenges with renewed resolve.”

After watching several injustices unfold over the past few years, McDonald said he was inspired to create the series to highlight the inequalities in the system.

“As Attorney Crump says, all you have to do is sit in the back of a court room and you’ll see that justice is not equal in this country,”said McDonald. “However, this show is different from any other true crime show. Even though these persons received the blunt end of a bad deal, their stories are inspiring.”

Crump became a household name after representing Trayvon Matin’s family after the teen was slain by George Zimmerman. Since then, he’s handled several high-profile cases, including serving as a representative for the counsel for Mike Brown’s family and some of the victims of former Oklahoma City Police Officer Daniel Holtzclaw.

Evidence of Innocence is scheduled to hit TV One in 2018.
